til; `IEC 61850`_ exists. Of course there's an international standard for substation / grid device communication & reporting. I just hadn't heard of it before. Was reading over their TISSUE (Technical Issue) database `user guide`_ & actually found it to be somewhat interesting, particularly the state machine description.
